My Fudgy Brownies Taste Like a Chocolate Malt from an Old-School Diner

1. 1 Line an 8x8-inch metal baking pan with parchment paper, making a sling, and coat it with nonstick cooking spray.
2. 2 In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, Ovaltine, and salt.
3. 3 In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the butter and sugars have melted and start to bubble, about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and stir in the chocolate chips until melted. Set aside until just warm to the touch, about 20 minutes.
4. 4 Use a chef’s knife to roughly chop the Whoppers, leaving most in large, chunky pieces. Alternatively, place the candies in a small rimmed baking sheet or baking pan and roughly crush them with the bottom of a dry measuring cup or sturdy glass. Measure out 1/4 cup of the Whoppers and set aside for topping.
5. 5 Vigorously whisk the eggs and vanilla extract into the pot with the chocolate mixture until very smooth, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Using a rubber spatula, stir in the flour mixture until just combined. Fold in the Whoppers.
6. 6 Scrape the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread into an even layer. Sprinkle the top evenly with the reserved 1/4 cup chopped Whoppers. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center has only a few crumbs on it, 30 to 33 minutes. (Don’t overcook; the brownies will set more as they cool.)
7. 7 Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Remove, using the sling, slice, and serve. Once cool, I like to wrap my brownies in foil, then transfer them to a zip-top bag; they can stay at room temperature this way for up to 5 days. Leave them uncut (and slice as you enjoy) to prolong their moistness. The brownies can also be transferred to the fridge for up to 2 weeks or the freezer for up to 3 months. Slice the brownies and wrap each one individually in plastic wrap before freezing so you can grab one when the mood strikes.
